The Innovation Gap: Why Great Science Doesn't Automatically Become a Great Startup

Every week, I meet researchers who have spent years, sometimes decades, solving incredibly difficult scientific problems.


Many have published in the world's leading journals. Some have developed technologies that could fundamentally change how healthcare is delivered. Yet despite their groundbreaking discoveries, very few of these innovations ever become products that improve patients' lives.


After working on the commercialization of more than 350 healthcare technologies and partnering with founders, clinicians, researchers, investors, and industry leaders, I have realized something important: The biggest challenge isn't inventing breakthrough science, it's translating that science into a business someone actually wants to build, fund, and buy.

 

The "Valley of Death" Isn't Just About Funding

People often describe the gap between academic research and commercialization as a funding problem.


In reality, it's usually a translation problem.


Researchers speak the language of publications, grants, statistical significance, and scientific novelty. Investors speak the language of markets, teams, execution, competitive advantage, and return on investment. Industry speaks the language of customers, reimbursement, workflow integration, and scalability.


None of these perspectives are wrong. They're simply optimized for different outcomes.

The startups that succeed learn to speak all three languages.

 

Start With the Problem, Not the Technology

One of the most common mistakes I see is assuming that because a technology is impressive, there must be a market for it.


The opposite is often true. The best founders become obsessed with understanding the problem before becoming attached to the solution.


  • Who experiences this problem?

  • How frequently?

  • What are they doing today?

  • Why isn't the current solution good enough?

  • Will someone actually pay to solve it?


I've seen relatively simple technologies outperform sophisticated ones simply because they addressed a clearly defined pain point.


Technology creates possibilities. Customer problems create businesses.

 

Your First Customer Isn't Always Who You Think

Healthcare is particularly challenging because the user, buyer, and beneficiary are often different people.


  • A physician may use a product.

  • A hospital administrator may purchase it.

  • An insurance company may reimburse it.

  • A patient ultimately benefits from it.


Understanding whose problem you're solving -and whose budget you're accessing- is just as important as demonstrating clinical efficacy.


I've watched promising technologies stall because they optimized for scientific performance while overlooking the purchasing decision.

 

Build Relationships Before You Need Them

One lesson that extends well beyond healthcare is the importance of building your network early.


Many founders begin reaching out to investors only after they're raising capital. Many researchers engage with industry only after they've built a prototype. Many startups seek mentors only after encountering major obstacles.


The strongest ecosystems work differently.


Relationships built before they're needed create better conversations, stronger partnerships, and faster progress.


This is one of the reasons I enjoy Boston's startup community. Researchers, entrepreneurs, investors, hospitals, universities, and operators regularly cross paths. Those connections often become the catalyst for entirely new companies.


Innovation is rarely a solo endeavor.

 

Great Investors Look Beyond the Science

As both someone who works in technology commercialization and someone involved in venture investing, I've learned that investors are rarely funding a technology alone.


They're investing in execution.


  • Can this team attract talent?

  • Will they adapt when the original plan changes?

  • Can they navigate regulation?

  • Can they sell?

  • Can they recruit customers?


Scientific excellence gets founders into the room. Execution determines whether they leave with a term sheet.

 

Commercialization Is a Team Sport

Some of the most successful innovations I've worked with weren't necessarily those with the strongest initial data.


They were the ones where scientists welcomed feedback from clinicians, entrepreneurs, business leaders, regulatory experts, and investors early in the journey.


Innovation accelerates when diverse expertise comes together.


The best founders don't see commercialization as compromising science.They see it as maximizing the impact of science.

 

A New Generation of Builders

One trend I'm particularly excited about is the growing number of researchers who want to become entrepreneurs - and entrepreneurs who genuinely understand science.


The traditional boundaries between academia, healthcare, startups, and venture capital are becoming more fluid.


That's creating opportunities for a new generation of founders who can bridge disciplines instead of operating within silos.


The future of healthcare innovation won't belong solely to brilliant scientists or exceptional entrepreneurs, it will belong to people who can connect discovery with execution.

 

Final Thoughts

Every breakthrough begins with curiosity, but changing the world requires more than a breakthrough.


It requires understanding customers, building trust, assembling exceptional teams, navigating uncertainty, and staying resilient when the path forward isn't obvious.


Science can change what's possible.


Entrepreneurship determines whether that possibility ever reaches the people who need it.

As someone fortunate enough to work at the intersection of research, healthcare, commercialization, and venture investing, that's the lesson I come back to every day.


The future won't be built by science alone, it will be built by the people willing to bridge the gap between discovery and impact.
